Re: The Ongoing New Financial Era Thread

It's academic. Just stay the course. It's a fool's errand for amateurs like us to try to time the market's ups and downs. We have to take the "long" view. I've had great years and horrible years, but over the decades my portfolio has grown at an average rate of about 7%. I'll take that. I ...

Re: 2018 Baseball OffseasonThread

I mean, he can barely buy his own island with a castle on that. How can he live? Ballplayers don't value themselves by Real World standards. They compare themselves to each other. Troy Tulowitzki makes 20M per. Friggin Jacoby Ellsbury makes 21M per. And Martinez just put up Lou Gehrig numbers for 2...

Re: The Ongoing New Financial Era Thread

Not today. Probably. But Monday will be interesting. And by "interesting" I mean "terrifying".

Re: 2018 Baseball OffseasonThread

No one is going to give him 10 years.

Of course not. But if he has another monster year, he's not likely going to play out the last 3 years for 22M per. At least not without testing the market. The Red Sox will probably have to sweeten that.

Re: 2018 Baseball OffseasonThread

I know one thing. If some team gives Harper 300M (or more), then JD Martinez is opting out of his contract after next year if he has another good season. He hit .330 with 43HR and 130RBI, he was instrumental in the Red Sox winning a WS and he signed for 110M (22M per). If the new standard is Bryce H...

Re: 2018 Baseball OffseasonThread

I totally don't get the Bryce Harper thing. When I look at his career stats, I don't see Mickey Friggin Mantle. At age 25 (Harper's age) Mantle was a Triple-Crown-caliber player. Harper is a career .280 hitter who averages around 30 HRs and 90 RBs a year. Very good? Sure. $300M good? Based on what? ...

Re: 2018 Baseball OffseasonThread

It will be interesting to see which Joe Kelly they get. He was actually mediocre during the regular season (ERA: 4.39 WHIP: 1.35). But he pitched very well in the post-season and was able to double his salary. The Red Sox now have to replace their closer and their set-up guy. I hope they have a plan.

Re: 2018 NFL Season

The lack of "continuity" in the NFL is astonishing. The Eagles were in the SB last year. This year, they don't even make the playoffs. The Jaguars were 10 minutes from the SB last year. This year, they suck. Year before that, the Falcons were in the SB. This year, they suck, Year before th...

Re: The Ongoing New Financial Era Thread

As for fears of an impending Bear market, I saw an analyst from Citi last night and he said their models indicated the DJIA would be higher than its present level at this time next year, I forget his name, but his first name was Tobias. So he must be right. Mrs psi_dad : You're basing our financial ...

Re: Random Thoughts Again

So, you cut a deal that serves no purpose other than to say "we got another check in the 'win' column" because, technically, the kid plead guilty. But if that was the motivation of the DA who offered this deal, then she has to be the most politically naive person on the planet. How could ...
