I totally don't get the Bryce Harper thing.

When I look at his career stats, I don't see Mickey Friggin Mantle. At age 25 (Harper's age) Mantle was a Triple-Crown-caliber player. Harper is a career .280 hitter who averages around 30 HRs and 90 RBs a year.

Very good? Sure. $300M good? Based on what? Hype?

He's a good fielder too. He's one of the better playes in the game. But, he's not $30M a year good. I don't think anyone is $30M a year good. And, he rejected that $300M offer. He thinks he is getting more. I've read that Boras is looking for $400M. It's insane. I'd be happy if the Mets landed him, but not at $40M a year.

Btw, if he ends up with the Phillies, his numbers will get a lot guadier. He will rake in that bandbox. But, if they can't put a team around him to support him, then who cares? He's going from a sitatution where the rotation included Scherzer and Strousburg. And, they won nothing. They never got past the first round of the post season.

I know one thing. If some team gives Harper 300M (or more), then JD Martinez is opting out of his contract after next year if he has another good season. He hit .330 with 43HR and 130RBI, he was instrumental in the Red Sox winning a WS and he signed for 110M (22M per).

If the new standard is Bryce Harper = 300M+, there's no way Martinez is playing out that contract unless he fades BADLY.

Maybe.

Martinez will turn 32 next August. Harper will turn 27 next October. Harper should have a few years where he may increase his power. Martinez is at that point where his overall numbers should start to decline. There are only so many morons working as a GM for or owning a major league baseball team. So, you only get so many Seattle Mariners paying Robinson Cano type of decision in a liftime.

I guess my point is, it certainly seems like another big season should be sufficient cause for Martinez to opt out, but doing so just because Harper gets stupid money comes with some serious risks. He will be 32 after next season. No one is going to give him 10 years. He may get 5 but I doubt he's getting 5 at $40M/year.

Of course, I can't believe what the Red Sox paid Price so what the heck do I know.

Of course not. But if he has another monster year, he's not likely going to play out the last 3 years for 22M per. At least not without testing the market. The Red Sox will probably have to sweeten that.

Yeah, that would be tough to swallow. I mean, he can barely buy his own island with a castle on that. How can he live?

Man, pro sports salaries are out of control. I should have practiced more as a kid. And, had more natural athletic talent.

Ballplayers don't value themselves by Real World standards. They compare themselves to each other. Troy Tulowitzki makes 20M per. Friggin Jacoby Ellsbury makes 21M per. And Martinez just put up Lou Gehrig numbers for 22M. Not to mention hitting .300 in the post-season with 3 HRs and 14 RBI ... and using the Dodgers 30M ace as a piñata.

Mets signed Wilson Ramos for 2 years/$19M. Love this deal for the Mets. Gives them the catcher they need without having to give anythign up. So glad the Sydnergaard for Realmuto rumors are officially dead. Now I just have to deal with the Syndergaard for everyone else rumors. Latest this weekend had him going to San Diego.

Matt Harvey signed a 1 year deal with the Angels for $11M, also known as more money than I will earn in my life.

So much for the Dark Knight.
A shame - I saw him as the best of that rotation. Boy was I wrong.
If at first you don't succeed, give up. There is no hope for you.
