His career seems to be in decline, but it's not like he totally fell off a cliff. Going from 17M to 3M in one year is surprising. That's less than what the Red Sox pay their backup infielder (Brock Holt).

There may have been better offers form him but I get impression that finances aren't the sole driver for him.

That's an interesting comment. I hadn't heard anyone else offered him, but maybe someone did.

And, he actually exercised his "no trade" clause last July to prevent being traded away from Baltimore. So, I'm not following the comment.

He played for a sucky team. Most type-A pro athletes don't want to play for sucky teams. Much like normal folks don't want to work for sucky employers. I am an example of someone who left a sucky employer for a great one.

As such, maybe he was willing to settle for less to play for a less sucky team.

Well, Baltimore didn't offer him a contract so staying with the same sucky team wasn't an option. And, it's not like Arizona is a less sucky team. They spent a lot of money, didn't win and didn't see a big influx in attendanc/paying customers and started to blow the whole thing up. They traded away their best offensive player and would probably trade Greinke if they could get someone to pick up enough of that contract (which seems unlikely). So, he's with another bad team, for little money, but in a nicer climate.

I suppose it's possible he turned down a better off for this climate. But, given he signed the deal ~2 weeks before the season starts, I doubt he was holding out for this offer. I suppose it is possible he turned down a better off thinking he would get more if he waited and it backfired. That could be. There are other examples of that happening. But, I don't think he's thinking "hallelujah" because he left Baltimore and was signed by Arizona. Especially after he turned down a trade to a potentially contending Philly team last year.

Yeah, you may be right. Who knows?

Best of luck to him. I always liked Adam Jones. Hope it works out for him in Phoenix.

Me too. He seems like a genuinely decent person from the little I know of him. Hope he proves everyone wrong and has an All Star year.

Apparently Jones also had a potential offer from the Marlins. Not sure for how much. If it's comparable, I would definetely play for Arizona over the Marlins. The Marlins are a shitshow right now.

Anyway, season is getting close. We are Gil Hodges days away:

Something else strange about that Jones thing is that he purchased the $4M mansion previously owned by Cal Ripken just 10 months ago. He has it on the market now. Seems odd for someone who expected to move in less than a year.

As an O's fan, what I always liked about Adam was that he just seemed to love to play. I know that sounds kinda dumb but I do think he realized how fortunate he was/is to be able to play a game for a living. A very, very good living. And not to be too romantic but it seemed like it was a joy for him to play. I know that's getting into touchy feely Field of Dreams stuff but that's how he struck me. Ripken was the same way. Even when he was on really crappy teams, he loved to play. Obviously it's more fun to be winning and for somebody as competitive as he was I'm sure it killed him inside but he still always had fun playing ball.

Shore - when you left MD and didn't look back that should have included the O's. Time to find a new horse - you can enjoy baseball past the first day of summer this year.
