Well, right now our system is take from the poor and middle class and give to the rich. The wealth gap in this country is not an accident. It didn't just happen. It's the result of a number of policy decisions over the past ~30+ years. At what point do we declare "trickle down" theory dead? Because, it's not delivered on any of its promises. What we've gotten instead is crushing debt and the strangulation of the middle class. The demise of our manufacturing base and some other events haven't helped either.

As for us moving towards European style socialism, I don't see it happening in the near term. You have people who are dirt poor and can't make ends meet cheering policies that financially hurt them and that they don't really understand. Joseph Goebells would marvel at how US media and corporate interests have so perfectly mastered the art of propoganda.
Alex Cora sucks. Mickey Callaway sucks. Baseball sucks. Everything and everyone just sucks. Is it football season yet?

That's the last gasp of a generation that remembers a different country that isn't coming back. You can't fight shifting demographics and birth rates. Their days are numbered.

Relying on government entitlement programs and redistributive measures was never a tried and proven path to financial independence. Working, education and not spending every nickel in your pocket on avocado toast and the latest iPhone still work.

America remains one of greatest economies where a person can change their economic fortunes. Nearly every person I know enjoys an equal or greater standard of living than their parents / grandparents. The few who don't generally had a circumstance (substance abuse, gambling, divorce) that derailed them. The only thing I see derailing that future is falling for the mirage of a utopian, egalitarian society via liberal progressive socialism (if you can't wait for it any longer head on down Venezuela, they reached it's inevitable maturity).

During a strong stock market period the wealth gap is going to increase because wealthy people tend to have a lot of stock. Stock ownership / investing is likely the vehicle most of this board has used to further our own economic status - I know I now make almost as much in a year investing as working. Wealthy people have the ability to generate passive income - should the government create entitlement programs so people who don't work have investment portfolios so they keep pace with the rest of society?

There are currently more job openings than people looking for jobs. (that's from the Bureau of Labor). I work in manufacturing - the sector everyone claims is dead and gone. We can't fill jobs for semi-skilled labor that pay $25-30 / hr is a low cost of living area. We struggle to fill salaried jobs that start range from $50-100K depending on years of experience.

People struggling to make ends meet? That definition has gone through a sea change in a generation from being able to get what you need to getting what you want as soon as you want it all the time.

If the economic outlook is so bad why are so many people trying to enter the country illegally? Why does every person I work with who emigrated legally tell me that they love America because of the opportunities and is a place where your you are primarily constrained by your ability and willingness to work and hustle vs forces beyond your control.

I understand our country isn't perfect and the fiscal discipline of our leadership leaves much to be desired but it's still one of the greatest places on this planet to live - and I plan to celebrate that tomorrow.

Probably because they come from shithole countries.

Mrs psu_dad: You can't say that.

Then they'll feel right at home with a huge portion of our population. Plenty of shitheads here.

oh boy Lama - pick up a copy of critical thinking guidelines and logical fallacies. I offer that in peace - but geesh. You need to get out in the world or widen your reading sources. The avocado / iphone statement is silly. Go volunteer in some poor neighborhood program - take a look at their toast my friend.

And again with "everyone one I know" Yikes. You are a lucky man I say! Take a look at numbers of people you DON"T know. That trend is not really the norm. Look up numbers on that claim.

Really - the entire post is rather revolting. And - outside your circle of better off buds - not a word is fair or accurate. Here is a simple tool: STAR Criteria - sufficient, typical, accurate, relevant. Little that you offer meets that base criteria.

Like I said - I encourage you to test your claims - get out, volunteer...read something else.

The local AZ republic just posted an article that people can not even pay rent. https://www.azcentral.com/story/money/r ... 738774002/
And that is just around here - yea, night school - get a degree - blah blah blah

and besides - you think there is a level playing field? Sorry - but the post you offer just makes me cringe - it is so lacking in truth and reality. Venezuela? WTH?

Happy Independence Day, everyone! I am with my wife and youngest son celebrating his HS graduation with a million of our closest friends at Disney World.

As for this country, I agree it is the greatest country in the world. Not perfect, but more perfect as The Founding Fathers envisioned. It could always be better, but that’s always the case.
