On top of that, there is an article on NJ.com indicating the Phillies are interested in making a trade to get Cole Hamels back. I know a lot of the rumors are just fluff, but I think the article had some valid points why this could be realistic.

Phils should be after Machado and a closer - like now.

I believe they are waiting til after the season to swaddle Machado in millions of dollars as for closer Neris was 27of 29 last year and they have a bunch of young hard throwers in the bullpen and minors so I don't see that happening. Nola is off to a great start and combined with Arrieta gives the Phils a chance to win every start

If you go after Machado now and can work a sign and trade deal you avoid being in a bidding war and he is a 5 tool player - he improves your O and D which by default makes your pitching better. May also keep him away from NL rivals.

After a somewhat dark period for Philly sports the future is sure looking good for Eagles, 76ers, Phils. They are all positioned to be competitive for next 5 years.

There is absolutely no chance Machado is going to agree to that, though. At the point the O's deal him he will be a few months away from being a free agent. Why would he possibly give up the opportunity to play the free market?

I guess if the Phillies offered him something like the Robinson Cano contract he would sign that, but the Phillies aren't going to do that.

Machado is represented by Scott Boras. It would take a Totally Ridiculous offer to sign him before he's a FA, probably larger than any contract in existence now.

I looked that up and it said he was represented by Dan Lozano of MVP Sports Group. Where did you see he was a Boras client?

Either way, it's not happening.

I read once that Boras got him a great deal when he was in HS and drafted very high in the first round (3rd? 4th?) . He had accepted a college scholarship but changed his mind. I didn't realize he subsequently dropped Boras.

EDIT: I wasn't mis-remembering. Here is an old Baltimore Sun article that says Boras got him a $5M+ signing bonus out of HS.
