Years ago, a top 5 finish and trip to the Rose Bowl would be considered a great year. If we've gotten to the point where the Rose Bowl is a turd sammich, then we have allowed the NCAA to totally screw up college football.

I'd rather go back to the old system with all it's ambiguity about "who's #1" if that's the case.

Don't give me the years ago rant. Years ago, women couldn't vote, blacks couldn't sit at the same counter as whites and homosexuals couldn't get married. Things change daily and so the significance of the bowl games. I will say that the more the day goes on the more irritated I am that we didn't get in. Washington basically played 2 less games than us. OSU got in sitting at home while we beat OSU and won the Big 10, the best conference in football. And F Michigan- I cannot wait to get them at home next year and make Harbaugh our dog.

I think if we play Michigan closer we get in. The hard part is did the committee know Bdub was asked to come out of the stands during the game to suit up?

So, racism, misogyny, bigotry and college football games all get equal levels of importance and vitriol in your world?

You may want to take a step back, think about the argument you just made, and try that one again.

First, I was being slightly sarcastic. The old system did not allow us to play for a few National Championships. I love bowl games but they are out of date. I think we will go to 8 teams in the near future.

Yeah, not sure how we got from A to Z there.

I agree with dad, whether he was being serious or not. I would love to see the championship games scrapped, along with the playoff and all bowl tie-ins. Play the regular season, and let the bowl committees put together the bowl match-ups that they deem to be the most intriguing and, in turn, the most profitable. Very little of college football post-season peaks my interest anymore. I'm not sure the last time I watched any of the semi-final games. The Orange, Fiesta and Sugar bowls are regularly played at 70% capacity. The Cotton Bowl has lost any and all charm now that it's played in at Jerry World. The one bowl game I do watch every year is the Rose.

We are now immersed in First World CFB Problems.

Sure beats discussing whether JF ought to be fired or not.

I could not disagree more! Every sport in college athletics has some sort of tournament. Somehow the 1AA doesn't have a problem with the way they do things. Division 2 and 3 don't seem to have any problems. Keep the current bowl system but add 8 teams. Who cares if a quarterfinal is sponsored by Gold Bond medicated powder or Viagra. It is just a name and brings in more money. It is absolutely silly that it took the NCAA this long to start a playoff. The problem the NCAA faces is there are 130 teams (Don't quote me) in division 1 football and we ned figure out a way to have a champion. Again, no one complains about 1AA, division 2 and 3 holding their tournament (probably because no one cares). The problem is this is what we have grown up with and that was my point with my previous post about the past 100 years. Things change and progress because that is life. I don't want to go back to the old system at all. Again, didn't we possibly lose 2 national championships because of the old system?? Yeah, great system it was.

LOL - I liked the old bowl system. Sure, Penn State got screwed in 1994, and probably during a couple of their undefeated seasons back in Joe's day, but I liked the mystery surrounding matchups. We played Clemson after the 1987 season - would never have played them otherwise - it was a fascinating matchup (Joe got out coached by Danny Ford, btw), and Clemson played counter to their tendencies and made Joe and (he who shall not be named) silly.

Anyway - I don't know that there needs to be closure to a college football season every year. That's kind of what made CF interesting. On the flip side, I haven't followed college basketball seriously since Lou Carnesecca was head coach and St Johns was called 'Redmen'...

It'll never happen b/c college football's a whore at this point, but it's interesting to reminisce.

Cheers
A good team has to have players capable of making plays...oh, wait - we're so there!

I don't know that there needs to be closure to a college football season every year.

It's essential. We must reduce the season to one champion and 100+ teams whose season was, in retrospect, a complete waste of time. It's more fun that way. Just winning a major conference and a New Year's Day bowl game in a warm sunny climate before 100,000 people is for losers. I can't imagine how that crappy system lasted for 80+ years.

Yes. That was sarcasm. :)

Can we get to an eight team playoff? Maybe. We will never see more than eight for one reason. MONEY!!! If you try to get to 16 , or maybe even eight, teams, the regular season may need to be shortened by a game. That means the only teams making money for that 12th game are the teams in the playoff. Aint a gonna happen.
