2017 Team Thread

Might be early for this, but so what. My quick take for next year is that despite losing some big-time names on both sides of the ball, we have lots of horses returning, with the key being the offensive line making a quantum leap forward with people like McGovern, Bates, et al, coming into their own. All great teams have a great OL allowing minor deficiencies elsewhere to be successfully papered over (think 1994). If the OL turns out not as good as I hope they will, we could be in the 8-4, 9-3 range. If it reaches potential quickly I see us at least 10-2, with a shot at greatness.

I think the depth of the Oline going into next season will be a sure improvement over where we were to start this season. Has to be...we were still pretty raw to start the year. With that talent comes the ability to control the game - holes open for Barkley that weren't there before, McSorley has more time in the pocket, etc. Controlling the game means controlling the clock which means a fresh defense in the 3rd and 4th quarters.

I see anything short of 10 wins as disappointing for a team with two Heisman Candidates. Frankly, I would be surprised if we weren't in the BiG Champ game again - Michigan loses key players, as does OSU, and who knows what MichSt will look like. Not to say it'll be easy, but I like our chances.

Should be another fun year, though maybe less so because of increased expectations.

Incredible expectations suck.

Sincerely,

With a year of the Moorehead offense under their belts, I'm looking forward to that up-tempo Moorehead offense that they ran at Fordham.

2016 Mets had a fun run to the playoffs, even if it did end badly. I think a better comparison is Bama, this year...All the hype only to cough up a fur ball at the end...

The 2016 season inspires us for the impending 2017 season and paybacks to PItttttt and UM, both as home.

We lose some great talent but the next man up is in play. We have some receivers that have not seen the field very much and are tall, speedy, difficult to defend. The OL should be an improvement. McSorley's inate ability to scramble and feel the rush is what made our line better last fall as Barkley was often stuffed at the line. They were better but not that much better, McS. masked the sack problems of previous years with his skills and runnning. Hack would have been sacked a lot last fall as he was before, immoble.

Defensive backs should be good as some new talent infiltrates and Allen returns. DL will be interesting. Good last year yet gave up some embarassing rusing totals at times. Another year maturation and S&C program will help here. Linebackers need help as Bell is gone, the heart of that position obviously.

Anticipating a very good season now. We are currently undefeated and will open against another undefeated team. It will be entertaining for sure.

Looking forward to watching this team next season, particularly if Brendan Mahon and Andrew Nelson return at or close to 100% healthy. Add in Bates, Gonzalez, McGovern and the redshirted guys in Menet and Fries, and that's a line that's really developing good depth and experience. As Mahon and Palmer went down this season, so went away the interior running game. Will be fun to watch what this offense can do if there are some holes opened between the tackles.

Biggest concerns next season rest at the WR position (can anyone step up and become the go-to?) and LB (can we stay healthy and cover our lack of depth)? Gesicki could help to mask any weakness there; and we'll see what Bowers and Dalton can bring to the TE position as well.

Looking forward to see what strides Shareef Miller makes this off season. He had a healthy start to the season as a pass rush specialist, but rounded into a nice all-around backup at DE.

Quickly glancing the schedule, there is a legitimate chance that Penn State could be favored in all but our game in Columbus. Fun stuff.

If Mahon, Nelson, Palmer play we beat USC going away.

Agreed someone needs to step up and be that #1 at WR - Hamilton, Thompkins, Blacknall have all shown flashes but one needs to show they can be a consistent threat. Godwin was great in traffic and YAC.

On D there are a lot of solid players but would like to see those "game changers" who deliver the key sacks, TFLs or TOs. I would say lack of TOs was one weakness of D this year.

Return game was respectable but it would be nice to see some game breakers in that area also.

To Chris's point - how long has it been that you couldn't wait for next season - and it was mid January. Thank goodness we have the antics of Trump vs the Left to amuse us until September.

I was thinking that just this morning! I had my cup of coffee and was on the back steps staring at the stars in the sky waiting for my dog to do his thing. I Emmert you not that, as I was standing there, I just had this desire for September. I can't wait for this team to take the field again. Spring ball will be nice, but I am so looking forward to see how much these kids grow and mature and come together as a team! And I can't wait to kick Pitt's collective asses, either!

Blacknall started to look like he's ready to be "the" guy. He's young and it took him some time to get on the field, but once he got on he looked like a difference maker. Hamilton has been a bit of a disappointment. When he first got on the field 2 years ago he looked like he was going to be amazing, but he really hasn't been consistent. Godwin just completely took over from him. The kid needs to fight for what he wants out there or he's going to be the #2 guy again.

Thank goodness we have the antics of Trump vs the Left to amuse us until September.

I've never been happier to be a baseball fan than I am right now. Once spring games start, I plan to tune out everything else that is going on in the world. Come March 1 I'm planning to stick my fingers in my ears and yell "LA LA LA LA LA LA LA LA" anytime someone tries to bring up Trump or politics. Kind of like Southern when more evidence comes out about climate change. :D Seriously, once baseball gets here, that will be my entire world focus until Penn State starts gearing up to play again.
