I think that the drive that gets people to that level means you get some really screwed up people at the top of the heap. In the late 1980s I used to love to watch Tyson box. He really got me into boxing. And, he was a seriously dysfunctional human being. Alex Rodriguez is one of the best baseball players I have ever seen, but as he got older he just had to cheat to keep that edge. And, by some accounts, his personal life leaves a lot to be desired. I think it's common with people like that.

I guess that's the price you pay when you're the best.

That's the price some pay. John Daly payed it before reaching the top. But Arnold Palmer didn't. Neither did Jack Nicklaus.

And to be honest, I don't give a sh!t about Tiger's personal demons. A few years ago, I attended the funeral of a beautiful young woman who was run over by a drunk. One of the nicest, most considerate persons you'd ever meet. That was just two years after I attended her wedding. And I don't ever want to attend a funeral like that again.

So screw Tiger. Get plastered at home or hire a driver.

Obviously not everyone at the top is a whack job, but a lot of them are.

And, I'm with you on Tiger and his demons. I don't care. I wasn't in any way trying to defend what he did. He should face the same penalties any poor schmuck would face, even if it includes jail time.

Obviously there is a high level of commitment to being an elite professional athlete and to maintaining that success over time. Granted it's a dream life we'd all love to live but it's also a tremendous mental and physical equipment - in today's game more than ever. Being a high profile athlete - and celebrity - also comes with temptations and pressures most of us can't contemplate. And there is a skill set in handling that fame and fortune aspect that is different from excelling at sports. Salt in you likely have a non-stop parade of people looking to use you for your money and fame and I can see where it could be easy to lose your bearings and sense of boundaries. especially when your in your 20s. I doubt any of us could understand what it's like when everything is available to you (wine, women, song) a result of your fame and fortune. The players that seem to deal with it the best are the ones who either have family/friends that keep them grounded (vs a family that uses them as an ATM) or players who took advantage of their college education and find a life beyond the turf and bright lights.

I apply the same train of thought regarding elite athletes/celebrities, etc.

I was an unmitigated jerk when I was 18, and I had neither fame nor fortune. I shudder to think about how much of an a-hole I'd have been if I'd have spent my formative years with everyone around me telling me how I amazing I am and having access to anything money can buy.

I mean, I'm enough of a jerk as is. I'm fairly confident I'd be universally hated if I had fame/fortune/etc. You know, which is totally different from now.
Don't blame me, I didn't vote for this clown.

I was fine at 18. I was a very late bloomer. I didn't reach my full jerk potential until much later.

Mrs psu_dad: Let's hope you've already peaked.
Me: No one asked for your two cents.

That said, there's jerk and then there's World Class Jerk. I'm not St Francis of Assisi, but I can't imagine boinking strippers, porno stars and IHOP waitresses after my wife suffered the Pains of Hell to bear me two sons. That takes some serious jerk credentials.

I know people who do things like that who aren't even remotely famous. In my 20+ year working career, I've done a lot of traveling and spent a lot of nights away from my wife, usually (but not always) with colleagues. And, in all the years I've been doing this, I can honestly say that a) I have never, ever done anything that I couldn't tell my wife about and b) she has never doubted that. But, I've met no shortage of people to whom their vows and commitments are valid up tot he point they know they can get away with something. When I first saw it I was astounded at how quickly people would cheat on their wife or fiancée or ... whatever. Over time, I've just gotten used to it.

It's a different topic, but one thing I've learned is you can tell a whole lot about people by how they act when they think no one is looking. Everyone has a story, and I try not to judge. Some people are in bad relationships, etc. But, as a general rule, you can just learn a whole bunch about what kind of person someone is by spending time with them away from home.

If I had been a sports start - and that being late 80s early 90s - before celebs had to deal with 24/7/365 ambush media I'd say :

1. I would have stayed away from drugs - never had interest - even in college when pot and coke were readily available - not making a moral judgement - just wasn't my thing
2. Gambling - again just something that's not my thing - if I go to Vegas with friends I sports gamble but it's nothing I crave
3. I'd like to think that would be little to none since my livelihood would depend on physical performance and health - and in my life when I've done bodybuilding shows or half marathons I quit drinking for up to 6-7 months. I am strictly a social drinker - only when out with friends. Almost never have a drink at home or when just out for a meal.
4. Women - that would be a problem. I'd be running through the cheerleading squad, taking up residence at the Playboy mansion (in the 80s that still would have been awesome) - I'd be trying to put up Wilt Chamberlin numbers. In my 20s, single, access to lots of attractive girls - that would have been my vice.

The Playboy mansion sold last year for $100M. The (very wealthy) guy who bought it lives next door. It wasn't clear if he plans on leveling it to expand his own estate.

I remember wondering at the time if there was enough Lysol Disinfectant in the entire world to scrub that place clean.
