By virtue of him picking Penn State over Michigan and Sparty automatically makes him as a bright kid with a tremendous future.

DL Smith Vilbert committed to PSU today. Sounds like he's pretty raw but has some good measurable. Late comer to the recruiting game but recruiting analysts seems to like the pickup.

If I remember right, former basketball player who took up football late and was thus recruited late. But look at his offer sheet - Florida State, Florida, Oregon, Miami and about 15 others.

Like Oweh last year, a potentially freak athlete with great upside. Perfect type of guy to get late in the cycle and at a position of need. Nicely done PSU.

He was a teammate of freshman PJ Mustipher in high school. How good was that D Line in high school, that’s just crazy.

Danny Dalton transferring to BC and Jarvis Miller to UMass - again I see these as issues of PT.

Shane - you following the recruiting pretty closely - how will all these late exits (5 to NFL, 7 potentially to transfer) shake out in terms of roster? Does PSU have an unexpected armful of schollies that they try to find late signees or transfers with or do they hold them for next recruiting cycle and go for a big class next year?

I believe they will try and sign as many as possible for this year and pocket others for next year. I think I read somewhere that the max you can take in any one year is 28, but could be wrong about that. Sounds like the staff was expecting some of these transfers but got a few more than expected.

Also sounds like they are kicking the tires on a few grad transfers, notably a WR from Miami and a DL from Rice.

I'm a bit confused by the volume of transfers. Not just at PSU but across the landscape. I know there is now on online portal to facilitate the process and makes the whole thing easier. But, the rules haven't changed, have they? I thought you still had to be released from your scholarship and you still had to sit a year.

So, why the exodus? Or, am I incorrect on the current rules?

As long as you have your degree, you don’t have to sit a year. If you go to the FCS division you don’t have to sit a year. I think the only PSU player in transfer portal that doesn’t have his degree , or will have by end of this semester, is Lamont Wade. I also think they changed the rule that the school has to release you, I believe they changed that this year. Essentially, if you’re not in two deep after year 3 or 4, many guys are leaving. Also note the Franklin has tried for players to earn their degrees in 3.5 years. Hasn’t also happened, but many of these guys that are transferring already have their degrees.
