That's the old "we will take what the give us" unless it's a pass in the 4th quarter and we want to run it for -4 into a nine in the box defense.

sameoldlama wrote:That surprised me Shore - so I did some more digging (way back in the old days a big recruiting tool of PSU was to say that every player who used their full eligibility under Paterno either played for a MNC or on an undefeated team - and that got broke late 80s) - but here are 20 years back

95 - 13th, 96 - 7th, 97 - 16th, 98 - 17th, 99 - 11th
00 - UR, 01 UR, 02 - 16th, 03 - UR, 04 - UR
05 - 3rd, 06 - 24th, 07 - UR, 08 - 8th, 09 - 9th
10 - UR, 11 - UR, 12- UR, 13 - UR, 14 UR

So in a 20 year span
Top 10 - 4 times
10 -25 - 6 times
Unranked - 10 times (3 you could assign to sanctions) - still in that span PSU was as likely to be unranked as Top 25.

I'm sure if I look at the 75 - 95 you'll see a significant difference

75-94

75 -10th, 76 - 23rd, 77 - 5th, 78 - 4th, 79 - 20th
80 - 8th, 81 - 3rd, 82 - 1st, 83 - UR, 84 - UR
85 - 3rd, 86 - 1st, 87 - 21st, 88 - UR, 89 - 15th
90 - 11th, 91 - 3rd, 92 - UR, 93 - 8th, 94 - 2nd (but should be 1st)

20 year span
Top 10 - 11 times
Top 11-25 - 5 times
UR - 4 times

That's a drop off.

The 2 games we lost were winnable! That is disheartening at this point. The OSU game was a sure win and the MSU game was a coin flip. We would possibly in a Championship contention if we won that OSU game. How I hate OSU!!! Next year we break their faces

PSU would get into playoff had they won either MSU or OSU game. Win the both and B1? and they may have been # 1 seed.

So close yet so far.

To imagine how far we have progressed from being reported DOA in 2012. I prefer KIA by the NCAA but we were not quite yet dead.

A credit to team and staff for over-performing to an extent but not having quite enough to crest the top of the hill.

Having done so much with such a burden placed on us the thought of what is next given the sanctions grow further in the rear view mirror is appealing yet a bit surprising. What will the staff do with such a plethora of riches in recruiting? Only next years team will demonstrate.

Barkley says he will play in the bowl game. Not shocked given everything we know about him.

I think the coaching staff should step him and say 'no'. He has done enough for the program and we shouldnt endanger his future for an exhibition game. Sometimes players need to be protected from themselves. And adults in charge should be looking out for their best interests. Maryland should be his swan song. He has earned it.

I saw that. I'm happy he's playing but won't begrudge him if he does not. It's crazy that has become a thing now, but I absolutely get it.

I agree with B&W here, and concur that it's kind of weird that these circumstances are now a 'thing' for projected stars. Where do you draw the line? Heck, we'd beat Maryland with or without Saquon, so why play in that game? Should guys now sit out non-conference games? A talent like SB ought to have a $5 mil insurance policy and go play the game, IMO.

Personally, I think there shouldn't be a line. We all know that age restrictions and the draft are part of the should-be-illegal collusion between the NCAA and professional-ranks. These guys should be able to jump to the pros at any damn time. But that is a whole different conversation :)

As for where the line is in the current construct - bowl games make sense to me. You need to win regular season games (including those non-conference games) to get into the bowl game and earn that huge check. Once that check has been earned, there really isn't anything worth playing for. The exception of course being the playoff games, which in addition to meaning even more money, could result in a championship which is probably important to the players themselves. For games like Maryland, it's silly to assume that we will win without the likes of SB. So, you'd generally have to start them. However, if we go up big in that game, take the stars out immediately.

I think about guys like Jake Butt and I'd be sick if that happened to Saquon or Gisecki. Agree on the insurance point though. As long as the school pays the premiums.

Agree they should be allowed to get school - or even agent paid insurance premiums.

I agree SB and MG have done all you can ask of a player but the coaches and team have also contributed to them being in the position they are in - and a clearly PSU will make a better showing with those two on the field. That may help raise the profile of some of the other players - that may be the difference in winning a game and finishing Top 10 - which for a lot of their team members will be their final game.

If they a nursing an injury I would say sit out - if healthy - play.

I believe SB is 99.9% gone - only thing I could see keeping him at PSU is if he projects to a team he is dead set against playing for (I'm looking at you Cleveland). Reports are Darnold might stay because he doesn't want to go to QB Hell.
