I'm not really worried about the offense. They'll score points no matter who's in there, the talent pool is deep. But the defense really does concern me. Pry loves to blitz and that's great but if they're not getting there consistently I think you're going to see a lot of completions against the secondary. In particular I'm worried about Troy Apke. He didn't impress me much last year even though he played a lot. He's probably the worst tackler on the field. Or at least he was last year. But I'm hearing he's improved (but really, you hear that about every player this time of year). So pass rush is going to be key. Plus, last year Golden was really an unsung hero in run defense from the safety position. He and Marcus Allen both battered themselves filling the holes when the rest of the D really wasn't doing the job. I know Spencer is doing a great job but he's going to have to have a couple of guys really step up and be a force when they really need it in crucial situations.
Chas, I agree with the sentiment. Rankings mean nothing, other than overrated, when you fail to take care and win. That said, and knowing I am no fan of polls before October, being ranked below overrated teams impedes the ability to move up. We hurt ourselves by failing to beat Pitt and not showing up against Michigan last year but a higher ranking before those losses may have gotten us into the playoffs. Or not, as we didn't take care of business. We know this and I am sure the team knows it even better! Here is to hoping we are in this position (or better) come December!

I agree September rankings are meaningless. Winning is what matters. But, it's been a long, long time since a PSU team has had this kind of respect a week into the season. We need to live up the rankings but it's been years since I felt PSU football could actually bitterly disappoint me as opposed to only pleasantly surprise me. I'll be crushed if it happens but it's a nice feeling.
Expecting to win. I could get used to this.
