Jeezuz, that is sad. Gooden started his career with so much promise. Addiction is a lifelong battle. Strawberry appears to have kept his demons at bay and is leading a productive life by counseling others with similar problems. Many of us have, no doubt, seen this play out in our own families.....never a pretty picture.
Yeah, well, that's like your opinion, man.

O's traded Andrew Cashner to Red Sox.

Maybe he can replace Chris Sale in the rotation. Sale is absolutely killing them. Ending win streaks seems to be his specialty this year. He's ending another one today. Brutal.

Just for Grower: Frank Viola thrown out of game for arguing with the robotic umpire

The best part of that is the Trackman showed that 3 of the 4 called balls were partially within the strikezone. So much for computer perfection.

Also, saw this morning that Bob Gibson has been diagnosed with pancreatic cancer. He's 83.

Viola was confused. I suspect many people are. The "strike zone" rectangular display is actually wider than the plate. It 's wider to account for the fact that the ball doesn't have to be entirely over the plate to be a strike. Consequently, the fact that part of the baseball icon is "touching" the displayed strike zone doesn't make it a strike. If the displayed ball icon perfectly "straddles" the edge of the displayed strike zone, then the pitch is borderline. If the displayed ball icon is more than half-way out of the displayed strike zone, then it's a ball.

The pitches Viola complained about were clearly balls.

PS - I'm sure pitchers are going to hate the new system. They've been getting the call on pitches an inch or so outside for years. Now, they're going to get "squeezed".

They should be squeezing the pitchers. The lack of offense in baseball is horrible.

I don't have a problem with MLB giving the pitchers a break. But they should do that by making the plate wider, not by calling pitches outside the zone as strikes.

PS - This is mostly academic because I hate baseball.

Royals traded Homer Baily to the A's in return for a prospect named Kevin Merrell. Merrell was the A's 2017 1st round pick. Merrell is a midlde infielder and has been playing in AA ball this year. I'd expect to see him called up late next season so he gets a taste of the Bigs and, assuming he doesn't crap the bed, see him as the Royals starting 2nd baseman in 2021.

And, that's the market floor for starting pitchers, people. If Homer Bailey gets a former 1st rounder, what does Wheeler get? What goes Bumgarner get? I'm surprised the A's paid that much for Bailey but they did.

Baily is a nobody. He'd be a bottom-of-the-rotation guy on a decent team I presume the A's have decided that (a) Merrell is a bust or (b) he's too low on their depth chart to matter.

Agree with your assessment of Baily. That's why I'm shocked they got a former 1st rounder. Especially after what the Red Sox gave up for Cashner. Seems the market moved over the weekend some.
